Design-Build and Energy Efficiency
Energy efficiency is built into a home through deliberate planning and disciplined construction. At Hercules Design Build, that starts with following local code requirements and continues with framing doors and windows, sealing crawl spaces, and preparing for future technological needs. In our design-build process, these decisions are made during the design stage to make sure construction proceeds smoothly.
Complying With Local Energy-Efficiency Codes
We comply with the latest energy-efficiency codes and stay current with each municipality's requirements. City standards differ from county standards, which differ from the standards in communities like Webster and Kirkwood. We make sure we understand the standards and build accordingly.
Introducing Thermal Breaks
Our team adheres to best practices for air sealing and the thermal envelope, which is everything about the house that shields the living space from the outdoors.
With that in mind, we look for opportunities to introduce a thermal break. One example is framing. Wood conducts heat, and thermal leakage occurs where there are studs in the walls or headers over windows and doors. We use half-inch foam as a thermal break, as it keeps cold or warm air from passing through.
Addressing Crawl Spaces
Approximately 60% of the air in your home comes in through the crawl space. In other words, if the crawl space is in poor condition, you’re breathing in that air.
We encapsulate each crawl space with a heavy membrane that’s air-sealed around the entire perimeter with spray foam. The result is a more comfortable living space above.
Clients are often focused on what they see and touch. We give equal attention to the parts of the home they may never see. The goal is to go beyond the minimum so the space supports long-term comfort and is less prone to problems over time.
Planning Ahead for Upgrades
Future-proofing is sometimes part of the conversation. As new energy-efficient technologies emerge, we try to plan ahead.
For example, even if a homeowner doesn’t currently own an electric vehicle, provisions can be made to provide electrical service in the garage or carport area so a car charger can be added later.
Improve How Your Home Functions
A remodel is an opportunity to improve more than finishes and layout. It’s a chance to assess how your home performs. Decisions made during the design stage that enhance energy efficiency have a lasting impact long after construction is complete.
